Sleeping and Dreaming

Doing Two Things at the Same Time?

Sweat dripping, shirt crumpled, posture unattended, eyes popping, and mind in chaos- a description of me after commuting from school to our home: a total zombie. Even “an orgy” wouldn’t be able to help me out of my grogginess after living my eight hour school day. After keeping my school equipment and dressing as a housemate, I see my bed magnified to a hundredth degree that even though I’m not in my room, I could see it engulf parts of our house as if it were a tsunami. Nonetheless, after struggling to survive this world awake, we are in an appeased mood to loosen up and forget our struggles for even a short worth while nap. It is the nap that would salvage us from all our past, present and future wrongdoings during our unconscious state. It is a salvation that leads to self pleasure- the pleasure that we all look for in our disastrous lives.

During sleep, we think of ourselves as safe from the destructive forces of our actions, but at the same time we become a mindless society that thinks only of self preservation and not of societal help.

We become “mature intelligent passionate adults whose life were unwretched” (Le Guin 3) during our vacation from the real world that needs us in order to be whole. In our sleep, we create a depiction of human greed in the search for pleasure of oneself that we sacrifice other people for our greed. As we escape our fears, our helplessness in our sleep, we forget the persons who need our help, the people whose lies circle upon us.

Why would someone run away from the real world to sleep and from sleep? Is it the realization that they have to do something for themselves, or for other people? Isn’t it that “only pain is intellectual, only evil is interesting” (Le Guin 3) in this present world of ours?

We are in control in our own point of view, and with that we see our own Omelas that we walk away from. We live in a world not without opposites, no world that exists with direct proportion and without inverse proportion, and therefore there is no impossibility that each other person’s Omelas may be each other person’s place that each has went to from walking away from their own. Therefore, let us be vigilant and help each other recover from deciding whether to stay or walk away from our Omelas
